Nuts - Battle of the Bulge

No, this article has nothing to do with the use of the word "nuts" in the epic WWII battle, also known as the Ardennes Offensive. I mentioned this because if you searched "nuts" in the internet, you'll come up with websites about the connection of "nuts" to the Battle of the Bulge. Instead, this has something to do with a lot of people's battle of the bulge, around the waistline.

You see, nuts are rich in protein and healthy monounsaturated fats. And eating lots of nuts will not result in high caloric intake as 10% of it just passes through the digestive tract unabsorbed.

Eight years ago, the US FDA acknowledged the health benefits of nuts and their role in the prevention of heart disease. Health claims were approved for seven nuts, namely: walnuts, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, and some pine nuts.

Walnuts and almonds, recognized as the healthiest nuts, are also rich in dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals, and phytochemicals, aside from protein. Nuts are also good sources of Omega-3 which is a potent anti-inflammatory and cholesterol lowering nutrient. Nuts are also an excellent source of Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, and B-complex vitamins. Essential minerals, such as magnesium, selenium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese, abound in nuts.

Nuts, aside from its recognized health benefits, can be a very effective partner in waging the battle of the bulge around our waistlines. Try eating nuts in between meals or just before meal. The water you drink will make the nut's fibers expand making you feel full. This will diminish your appetite and minimize your food intake.

I used to indulge on chocolates after meals, but I had gave it up in favor of the healthier nuts, for reasons aforementioned above. Before, I had to deceive myself by justifying that it's dark chocolates anyway I'm indulging on. But then, even dark chocolates contain hydrogenated oil, which is a source of unhealthy trans fats.

So, it's goodbye chocolates, and welcome, nuts! If you want to win your "battle of the bulge," go "nuts"....it can effectively help.
